To the Ancient Scotland Introduction...

Grain

An earth-house at Grain in Kirkwall on the Mainland or Orkney was found in 1827. It was closed up again and not excavated until 1857.

Little detail is known about what was found during the excavation.

There are traces of the above-ground settlement which would have made use of the earth-house as a cellar.

The earth-house is unusually deep, with the roof of the chamber lying some 2 metres below the ground. (It is more usual for a souterrain to have its roof actually at ground level).
