Kettins Pictish Cross-Slab

    Coupar Angus, Perthshire

This very worn and weathered class III slab was for a long time used as a footbridge across a burn. It now stands in a nearby churchyard.

The cross is very worn, and hardly anything can be seen to the left of the cross shaft.

On the right of the shaft are four panels containing (from the top):

• a creature of some kind. At the left hand end of the body, there is what could be the head of a pictish beast - however, the legs are those of a horse or dog;
• a griffin, or possibly a winged horse;
• three cloaked figures. Elizabeth Sutherland describes this panel as a man in a cloak with two beast-masked men on either side. She must have better eyes than me;
• the bottom panel is totally unclear to me. Elizabeth Sutherland again: two beasts with crossed bodies biting each other's tails.
